Bird-Friendly Glass

As a responsible manufacturer, Doorwin understands the importance of environmental conservation and protection of wildlife. With 2019’s approval of the bird-friendly construction standards by the New York City Council, we are proud to offer custom made bird-friendly glass options for our clients.

Our bird-friendly glass is designed with special patterns that are visible to birds, reducing the risk of bird collisions, and ensuring the safety of our feathered friends. Doorwin bird-friendly glass is specially designed to protect birds from collisions with dot patterns while maintaining the view, and without compromising on aesthetics and energy efficiency., making them a perfect choice for environmentally conscious clients who are also looking to reduce their energy bills.

Doorwin recently took on a bird-friendly glass project for a high-rise building in the vibrant Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. Our client wanted to comply with the bird-friendly glass requirements that were mandated by the city council. Our team worked closely with the client to design and customize the glass to meet both the aesthetic and functional requirements of the building.

We conducted multiple consultations with the client to determine the best approach for the project. We took into account the location of the building, the type of birds in the area, and the building's overall design. Our team ultimately created a bespoke solution that seamlessly blended with high energy efficiency, while providing the necessary protection for birds.

The end result was a beautiful and functional bird-friendly glass solution that exceeded the client's expectations. Our team's expertise and attention to detail ensured that the final product not only met the city's requirements but also enhanced the building's overall performance.

At Doorwin, we take pride in our commitment to sustainability and the protection of our environment. Our bird-friendly glass options are just one example of our dedication to creating products that are not only beautiful and functional but also contribute to a healthier planet. 01 / Definition of bird-friendly glass

Bird-friendly glass, also known as bird-safe glass or avian-friendly glass, refers to glass products designed to reduce bird collisions. These glass products are designed to minimize the reflectivity and transparency of glass, making it less likely for birds to mistake it for open airspace. Bird-friendly glass may include features such as patterned or frosted glass, UV-reflective coatings, or visual markers that alert birds to the presence of a barrier. The goal is to prevent birds from colliding with buildings and windows, which can result in injury or death.

02 / How many birds are killed because of hitting windows per year?

It is estimated that up to 1 billion birds are killed each year in the United States alone due to window collisions. These collisions often occur because birds are unable to perceive the glass and mistake it for open space, leading to fatal impacts. The issue is particularly prevalent in urban areas, where glass-covered buildings are common and migratory birds can become disoriented by artificial lighting at night. The loss of so many birds is not only tragic but also has a significant impact on ecosystems and biodiversity. Therefore, it is essential to take measures to reduce the risk of bird collisions, such as using bird-friendly glass in construction.

03 / How buildings do impact birds’ behavior?

Tall buildings can significantly impact birds' behavior and survival in various ways. Firstly, birds may mistake the reflection of the sky or trees in the building's glass windows as a clear path to fly through, leading to collisions and injuries. Secondly, tall buildings can disrupt birds' migration patterns and nesting habitats, causing long-term harm to bird populations. Thirdly, tall buildings with bright lights can attract birds, leading to exhaustion and disorientation. Overall, the presence of tall buildings in urban areas can have a significant impact on bird populations and their behavior.

04 / Bird deterrence legislation in North America

In recent years, many cities and states across North America have taken action to protect birds from collisions with buildings. For example, in Toronto, Canada, a bird-friendly building design guideline was established in 2010, and in 2019, the city became the first in Canada to require bird-friendly measures for new buildings and major renovations.

Similarly, in 2011, San Francisco became the first city in the United States to require bird-safe building standards for new construction, and other cities such as New York and Chicago have also implemented bird-friendly building legislation.

As of 2023, at least 37 cities in the United States have enacted bird-friendly building ordinances, and the number is expected to continue to grow as more people become aware of the issue and take action to protect our feathered friends.
